Microsoft declined Marvel deal; Sony secured Spider-Man games

A history book excerpt reveals that Marvel approached both PlayStation and Xbox seeking a committed publishing partner for Spider-Man games, and that Microsoft declined the opportunity while Sony accepted.

How the search for a new games partner began

According to passages from The Ultimate History of Video Games, Volume 2, published by Steven L. Kent and shared on the Resetera forum, Marvel was looking for a publisher that would treat its game properties as long-term investments rather than low-quality licensed titles.

Jay Ong, then vice president at Marvel, is quoted in the book explaining that Marvel wanted “a publishing partner that hadn’t embraced the mindset of ‘low-quality licensed games’” and needed a company focused on building a franchise with significant talent and commitment to quality.

Why Marvel narrowed the options

Ong told the author that Marvel identified three companies that fit the profile. Nintendo was quickly set aside because it primarily developed games from its own intellectual properties, leaving two console manufacturers: PlayStation and Xbox.

Microsoft’s decision and Sony’s acceptance

Marvel entered discussions with both Microsoft and Sony to determine who would take on the project. Ong recalls telling both sides the company did not have major console deals in place and asking what they would do. He says Microsoft’s strategy was to focus on its own intellectual properties, and that Microsoft declined Marvel’s proposal.

Sony, through PlayStation, agreed to the partnership. The resulting Spider-Man game became one of PlayStation’s most successful franchises and spawned multiple sequels.

Legacy of the choice

The book frames the decision as pivotal: Marvel wanted a partner with “endless pockets” and a long-term vision, and Sony’s acceptance led to the creation of a major gaming franchise. The account suggests Microsoft may still recall the refusal years later, while Marvel and Sony have benefited from the collaboration.
