Microsoft signaled it is preparing a new generation of Xbox hardware after Xbox president Sarah Bond revealed a strategic partnership with chipmaker AMD in a video shared on social media. Bond said the collaboration will bring custom chips to the successor of the Xbox Series family, though she did not disclose a name, technical specifications or a release date.
Custom AMD chips across devices
According to Bond, AMD will co-develop custom processors that will power an entire line of devices. The scope described includes the next-generation Xbox as well as portable devices, PCs, cloud infrastructure and accessories.
Bond said the partnership aims to improve visuals, immersion and experiences enhanced by artificial intelligence. In her words: “Together, we will deliver deeper visual quality, immersive gameplay and AI-powered experiences.”
She also emphasized that the upcoming hardware will fully support the current Xbox game library, allowing players to carry over titles from Xbox One, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.
Compatibility and platform strategy
Bond stated the company does not see itself “tied to a single store or device,” a comment that has been interpreted as aligning with broader platform flexibility. That remark has fueled speculation about possible future integrations with other game storefronts, including Steam, but Microsoft has not confirmed any such plans.
Xbox services and AI integration
Beyond new hardware, Microsoft is expanding features across its gaming ecosystem. One highlighted initiative is tighter integration between Copilot, the company’s AI assistant, and the games division. The plan is for Copilot to act as an in-game companion that can offer tips, make suggestions, and handle tasks like downloading and launching titles.
That Copilot functionality has been rolled out in some countries in a limited form via mobile apps and is described as still in early stages. Microsoft expects the technology to reach consoles, portable hardware and PCs in the future.
Game Pass remains a focus
Microsoft continues to invest in its subscription service, Game Pass, which the company positions as a leading offering in console subscription gaming. The service is noted for regularly delivering major releases on day one of their launch.
