Leak shows redesigned disc-free Xbox Series X for 2024

Documents filed with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission indicate Microsoft plans a redesigned Xbox Series X for 2024 that drops the physical disc drive and adopts a new cylindrical form factor, while doubling internal storage to 2 TB.

What the new Series X will include

  • The updated Xbox Series X, codenamed Brooklin, is described in the filings as having a cylindrical shape and no optical disc drive, making it a fully digital console.
  • Internal storage is listed at 2 TB, double the storage of the current Series X model.
  • Networking and wireless upgrades cited include support for Wi‑Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2.
  • Microsoft’s launch price target remains the same as the original Series X: US$ 499.
  • The console will also feature a front USB‑C port that can provide power, and it will ship with a redesigned controller.

  • The controller, codenamed Sebille, is expected to be announced later this year and will include an accelerometer for angular motion detection (a gyroscope).
  • Its design uses a two‑tone color scheme and it supports direct cloud connection alongside Bluetooth 5.2.
  • Specifications list “precision haptic feedback,” quieter buttons, a rechargeable and removable battery, and modular analog sticks.

Series S update and timeline

Microsoft’s documents also reference an updated Xbox Series S with 1 TB of internal storage. That refreshed Series S is expected to include the same wireless and Bluetooth upgrades (Wi‑Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2) and to ship with the new Sebille controller.

When Microsoft may announce details

The filings suggest official announcements about the updated consoles are planned between September and November, according to The Verge.
