How MMR Shapes Matches in LoL, Valorant and CS2

Matchmaking Rating (MMR) is the hidden metric many competitive multiplayer games use to pair players of similar skill. It influences who you face in games such as League of Legends (LoL), Valorant and Counter-Strike 2 (CS2), aiming to create balanced and enjoyable matches.

What Matchmaking Rating means

MMR — sometimes called Matchmaking Ranking — is a system that estimates player skill and places individuals into matches based on that estimate. By measuring a player’s ability and uncertainty around that estimate, matchmaking algorithms attempt to predict win probabilities and assemble teams with comparable chances of success.

Where MMR comes from

The concept behind modern MMR traces inspiration to the Elo system used in chess, created in 1939, but practical implementations for videogames appeared decades later. Early commercial precursors include TrueSkill, developed using beta data from Halo 2 and deployed on Xbox Live in 2005.

TrueSkill relies on Bayesian statistics to estimate match outcomes from known player skills and to track uncertainty in those estimates. This combination lets the system update player ratings after games and forecast victory probabilities for future matchups.

Microsoft later replaced the original TrueSkill with TrueSkill2 in 2018. TrueSkill2 showed improved predictive performance in tests with Halo 5 matches, achieving 68% accuracy according to a study released by Microsoft (study released).

League of Legends ranking structure

Riot Games does not publicly disclose the inner workings or numeric values of LoL’s MMR. The company acknowledges an internal MMR but relies on and publishes a visible ranked system as the primary representation of player progression.

LoL’s ranked ladder consists of ten tiers: Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster and Challenger. From Iron through Diamond each tier is divided into four divisions (IV lowest to I highest); Master, Grandmaster and Challenger have a single division each.

Progression between ranks is driven by League Points (LP). Players earn LP for wins and lose LP for defeats; reaching 100 LP is required for promotion within the standard tiers. For promotion beyond Master, the thresholds increase: 400 LP are needed to advance to Grandmaster and 800 LP to reach Challenger.

How Valorant’s ranking works

Valorant uses a ranking system similar to LoL but with different tier names and divisions. Its ranks are Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Ascendant, Immortal and Radiant. Each rank except Radiant is split into three divisions; Radiant exists as a single top tier.

Valorant also tracks a Rank Rating metric earned from wins and lost on defeats. As in LoL, 100 points are required to move up a division. Access to the Radiant tier is limited: only the top 500 players in each region can reach Radiant, and they must meet a region-specific minimum score:

  • 100 for LATAM and KR.
  • 200 for BR.
  • 300 for NA, APAC and EU.

Counter-Strike 2: Premier and Competitive modes

CS2 presents two ranking modes: Premier and Competitive. Premier is available to players who obtain Prime Status and uses a clearer MMR-like system called CS Rating. CS Rating sorts players into seven bands:

  • Gray: below 4,999
  • Light Blue: 5,000–9,000
  • Blue: 10,000–14,999
  • Purple: 15,000–19,999
  • Pink: 20,000–24,999
  • Red: 25,000–29,999
  • Gold: above 30,000

CS Rating is affected by match outcomes, individual performance within matches and the ratings of opponents faced. Those same factors apply to the traditional Competitive mode, which retains a rank structure similar to CS:GO with 18 ranks divided across four tiers:

  • Silver I–IV, Silver Elite, Silver Elite Master.
  • Gold Nova I–III, Gold Nova Master.
  • AK I–IV, AK Crusader, AK Sheriff.
  • Eagle I–II, Supreme, Global Elite.

Unlike Premier, the Competitive mode assigns a separate rank per map, so players hold distinct ranks for different maps. Competitive is available to all players, including those who play for free.

Transparency differences across games

Game developers vary in how much they reveal about their matchmaking metrics. Riot publicly maintains visible ranked ladders while keeping precise MMR values and formulas private. Valve’s CS2 offers a more explicit CS Rating for Premier, with numerical bands and stated contributing factors.

Why MMR matters

MMR and related rating systems determine match quality, influence progression, and shape competitive ecosystems. They balance player matchups by estimating skill and adjusting ratings over time based on outcomes and performance, which affects promotion, access to top tiers and perceived fairness in competitive play.
