Ex-Rockstar producer explains why GTA 6 won’t launch on PC first

PC players will have to wait for Grand Theft Auto 6: the game will launch first on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with the PC edition scheduled for a later date. Former Rockstar Games producer John Ricchio said this staggered release is a development choice, not evidence that the studio is uninterested in the PC audience.

Why starting with consoles is more efficient, according to Ricchio

Speaking on the Kiwi Talkz podcast, Ricchio argued that building a game around console constraints is often easier than creating it for high-end PCs first and then downgrading. He said scaling a project down to run on less powerful hardware is typically more difficult than expanding features later.

“It’s much better to start with the limitations. Reducing is much harder than expanding,” Ricchio said.

In practical terms, Ricchio explained, optimizing the game for consoles first lets the development team later leverage more powerful PC hardware to add graphical improvements and extra features after the core experience is stable on consoles.

Red Dead Redemption had an early PC build that wasn’t prioritized

Ricchio also shared that an early PC version of Red Dead Redemption existed during initial development. Despite that, Rockstar never prioritized adapting the game to PC, since team resources were redirected to other projects such as Grand Theft Auto V.

The PC version of the original Red Dead Redemption eventually released in 2024, more than 14 years after the game’s initial console debut.

Resource allocation determines platform timing

Ricchio emphasized that staggered launches are a matter of resources and prioritization rather than disregard for PC players. Producing a separate PC edition requires dedicated teams and additional development time, forcing studios to decide where to allocate personnel and budget during production.

“It’s not that we don’t care about PC. The question was: is it worth spending time making a PC version or keep working on GTA 5?”

He noted that a port to another platform typically proceeds only when there is sufficient technical or commercial justification.

GTA 6 release schedule and PC status

Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have not announced a release date for GTA 6 on PC. The game is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; while a PC release is expected to follow at some point, no official window has been confirmed.
