Bungie confirms layoffs after closing Destiny 2 content cycle

Bungie confirmed on Thursday, June 26, that it carried out a new round of layoffs affecting teams that worked on Destiny 2 and the upcoming shooter Marathon. The move followed the release of Monument of Triumph, the update the studio says closed the cycle of new content for Destiny 2.

Company cites internal restructuring and missed targets

In a statement posted to social channels, Bungie said it is undergoing an internal restructuring and needed to reduce its workforce to align team size with projects currently in development. The studio acknowledged that Destiny 2 “did not meet expectations in recent years,” which it identified as a direct factor in the staffing decision.

“After our final content update for Destiny 2 and with our future projects still in early incubation,” Bungie said (translated), “we unfortunately cannot continue operating at the size we previously had.” The company added that it recognizes the impact on affected employees but considers the reductions necessary for the studio’s long-term sustainability.

Scope of layoffs and teams affected

Bungie has not disclosed the exact number of employees laid off. An internal memo signed by PlayStation CEO Hermen Hulst stated that most of the team that worked on Destiny 2 will be affected, as well as some developers on Marathon, the studio’s extraction shooter.

Earlier rumors suggested up to 50% of staff could be cut, but Bungie has not confirmed that figure.

Marathon remains in development

Despite the layoffs impacting parts of Marathon’s team, Bungie said its future projects, including Marathon, continue in development. The studio did not provide a timeline for further announcements and said it will share more details about next steps at a later date.

With new Destiny 2 content concluded, Marathon is now described by Bungie as the company’s principal project.

Part of broader industry trend

The layoffs at Bungie add to a pattern of workforce reductions across the games industry in recent years. Since 2025, several major companies—including EA, Ubisoft, Sony and Xbox—have announced staff cuts and reorganizations amid rising development costs, strategic shifts and a slowing market.

Bungie said the restructuring is intended to reorganize the company as it prepares for the next phase under PlayStation’s leadership.
