DICE, an EA subsidiary, is developing crossplay, cross-progression and cross-purchases for Battlefield 2042, enabling players on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S to play together and carry progress and purchases across platforms, EA confirmed.
How crossplay will work
The feature will let players on different platforms join the same matches. Groups can opt out of mixing PC and console players if they prefer not to. EA said DICE is “looking to build and test” the functionality, though some limitations and opt-outs will apply.
Generational differences and player limits
PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users can play together with each other, but they will be separated from newer platforms. The distinction exists because matches on current-generation consoles and PC support up to 128 players, while last-generation consoles run 64-player matches.
Aside from the smaller player count and reduced map area sized to match half the player load on older consoles, EA said the experience for PS4 and Xbox One players should otherwise be identical to that on next-gen systems, including dynamic weather events and environmental hazards.

Testing schedule and intent
EA indicated that technical tests to integrate crossplay are planned for this summer in the northern hemisphere (winter in the southern hemisphere). The company said the first broader, invite-only opportunity to test the feature will occur during a technical playtest.
Cross-progression and cross-purchases details
EA also described work on cross-progression and cross-purchases for Battlefield 2042. According to the company, progress and purchases unlocked on a PlayStation copy of the game will transfer to Xbox or PC versions and vice versa.
