Sony’s announcement that it will stop producing physical PlayStation games for titles released from January 2028 has sparked a large backlash across social platforms, with the company’s first social post since the decision becoming a focal point for criticism.
Post about FlexStrike overwhelmed by protest
The PlayStation account’s post highlighting the FlexStrike arcade controller drew far more attention than its product message: within days it accumulated over 25 million views and more than 65,000 replies, figures well above the profile’s usual engagement.
Rather than discussing the new accessory, thousands of commenters used the thread to voice disapproval of Sony’s move away from physical discs, asking the company to reconsider and criticizing the shift toward a digital-only strategy.
Contrast with earlier engagement
The wave of criticism stands in stark contrast to a late-June post about the same FlexStrike controller that registered only a few hundred replies, underscoring how the policy announcement changed the conversation around otherwise routine posts.
Protests spread across platforms
Although X (formerly Twitter) concentrated the largest volume of comments, similar reactions appeared on Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky and YouTube. Reports indicate that many recent PlayStation posts now attract comments about the end of physical media regardless of their subject.
Brands join the conversation

The online response drew attention from other companies as well. In one widely shared interaction, Domino’s Pizza replied to the PlayStation post with “Someone order a digital pizza?” — a joke that quickly went viral and garnered hundreds of thousands of engagements.
Sony has not publicly addressed the social reaction
Sony has not issued an official response to the surge of criticism on social networks. Analysts say if the company intends to clarify its strategy or reconsider aspects of the decision, such actions could take several weeks.
As precedent, Sony’s earlier plan to close the PS Store on PS3 and PS Vita was reversed about three weeks after community backlash, suggesting any change in stance after this controversy might follow a similar timeline.
Policy remains in place for 2028 releases
For now, Sony’s announced policy stands: new PlayStation games released from January 2028 onward will no longer be produced in physical format, representing a major shift in the platform’s distribution model.
