Anbernic launches GBA-style RG 34XX handheld

Anbernic has released the RG 34XX, a handheld console styled after the Game Boy Advance (GBA) that adds modern features such as extra buttons and support for classic-game emulation. The device is listed on the manufacturer’s website for US$69.99 (about R$430.40), with a promotional price of US$63.99 (about R$393.51) available until December 18.

The RG 34XX is offered in four finishes: purple and black—echoing original GBA colors—and two transparent variants in green and red.

What’s changed from the classic GBA

While visually similar to the original GBA, the RG 34XX incorporates several notable updates. It adds two extra action buttons and two additional shoulder buttons, increasing control options beyond the original layout.

The handheld uses a larger 3.4-inch display with a 720×480 resolution and a 3:2 aspect ratio. For modern connectivity, the unit includes a microSD card slot and an HDMI output for connecting to TVs or monitors. The classic volume dial has been replaced by a bidirectional switch for finer volume control.

Hardware and emulation performance

The RG 34XX runs on the Allwinner H700 chipset, a processor Anbernic has used in other devices. Reports cited by the portal indicate the system performs well with 16-bit era games and particularly handles Game Boy Advance titles effectively, helped by the screen’s compatible aspect ratio.

However, the device shows limitations with more demanding 3D console emulation, such as Nintendo 64, Sega Dreamcast and Sony PSP, where performance is less consistent.

Early reviews and ergonomics

Initial impressions have been largely positive. Russ Crandall of the YouTube channel Retro Game Corps described the RG 34XX as an “almost perfect” recreation of the GBA, while noting that comfort may vary depending on users’ familiarity with the original’s ergonomics.

Retro Handhelds praised the RG 34XX’s fidelity to the GBA design but warned it may be uncomfortable for players with larger hands. Reviewers highlighted that the primary shoulder buttons feel good, yet the secondary, smaller set of shoulder buttons—positioned where the GBA’s cartridge slot used to be—was criticized for being less ergonomic.

Who should consider the RG 34XX

According to Retro Handhelds, the RG 34XX is an appealing option for retro-game enthusiasts who want an authentic GBA-like experience with modern conveniences at a competitive price. Players seeking extended comfort or planning to prioritize 3D emulation may want to explore alternative handhelds better suited to those needs.
