Puzzle block games surge amid mobile market attention battle

The mobile games market saw installations of top titles decline in the first half of 2026, even as overall revenue grew across many genres, according to an analysis published by Azur Games. The report highlights that block puzzle games advanced notably as apps like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube increasingly compete for users’ screen time.

Block puzzle segment grows in H1 2026

Azur Games’ data indicates that block puzzles recorded strong growth between January and mid-2026. The category covered in the report also includes titles with Arrow-style mechanics.

While several genres experienced falling or stable download numbers, the performance of block puzzles suggests these mechanics are moving beyond a passing trend and are becoming an established subgenre in the mobile market.

Other puzzle types remain relevant: Physics Puzzles have grown previously, although some of that audience appears to be migrating toward block and sort puzzle experiences.

Financial outcomes within puzzle subgenres vary widely. Games within the same subcategory can show very different revenue performance depending on mechanics and monetization strategies.

A primary factor behind the drop in installations is not solely the volume of available games. Azur Games notes that mobile titles must now compete for user attention with social networks, messaging apps and short-video platforms.

In practice, watching a short video now often competes with starting a game session. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube are named among the main rivals for users’ time.

This shift helps explain how downloads can decline without a proportional fall in revenue.

Azur Games’ internal figures also show eCPM, an advertising revenue metric, has been rising since early 2025. For developers, that trend underscores the need for monetization and operational strategies that can offset lower user acquisition.

Established titles keep top positions

Longevity of existing games creates another barrier for new releases. More than half of the 300 titles with the highest install counts analyzed by Azur Games were released before 2024; some have been available for ten or eleven years.

The share of recent launches in that Top 300 has fallen. In mid-2023, new releases made up about 8% of the ranking; by 2026 they accounted for only 2%.

New projects therefore compete against games that have accumulated years of content, user behavior insights and mature monetization and LiveOps frameworks. Block puzzles serve as an example of how fresh takes on familiar mechanics can partially overcome this advantage.

Developing successful puzzles remains challenging

Despite positive trends for puzzles overall, building a successful puzzle game is not a simple formula. These games typically require a large volume of content: when players progress quickly, developers must continuously produce new levels and challenges.

Balancing difficulty is critical. Levels that grow too hard risk driving players away, while levels that stay too easy can become repetitive.

Some studios use artificial intelligence to help generate levels and tune difficulty curves, but Azur Games notes that AI does not replace the need for teams skilled in design, balance, progression pacing and player behavior analysis.

Moreover, large companies have developed expertise in this genre over many years, creating knowledge and operations that are difficult for new studios to replicate.

Quality alone no longer guarantees success

The report points to a broader transformation in mobile game development: technical competence is no longer sufficient. Studios must integrate monetization considerations early, plan long-term strategies and maintain structures capable of supporting years of content and LiveOps.

At the same time, the rise of puzzle formats shows there is room for new trends when developers find different approaches to established genres.

In a market where games vie not only with each other but also with the next short video in a feed, retaining player attention can be as crucial as convincing them to install the title.
