Apple, Microsoft collaborate to add Xbox Series X controller support

Apple says it is working with Microsoft to make the Xbox Series X and Series S controllers compatible with iPhone and iPad, potentially expanding options for gaming on iOS and iPadOS devices.

Apple confirms collaboration with Microsoft

On a support page, Apple states that it is coordinating with Microsoft to ensure the new Xbox controllers will work with iOS and iPadOS. The move aims to provide users with additional ways to play on mobile and tablet devices.

Timeline for support could be slow

The rollout of compatibility may not be immediate. As noted in a report, past collaborations between the two companies took time to result in official support: when Microsoft’s Elite Series 2 and the Adaptive Controller were introduced, Apple and Microsoft worked together but formal support arrived roughly one year after those devices launched.

Implications for cloud gaming

Controller support on iPhone and iPad is relevant beyond App Store titles. Microsoft has indicated plans to bring its xCloud streaming service to iPhones despite App Store restrictions. The company says it will soon offer a way to play its library directly through the web browser, a workaround intended to bypass limitations imposed by the App Store.

Other controllers and Apple compatibility

Separately, the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller may see Apple support sooner. According to Apple Insider, the iOS 14.3 beta appears to include support for Sony’s DualSense accessory, although that report has not been officially confirmed by Apple.
