Microsoft says Sony and Nintendo will remain industry leaders

Microsoft reiterated that its planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard will not displace Sony or Nintendo as industry leaders, and argued the deal will be beneficial for the gaming sector.

Microsoft frames acquisition as pro-competition

On its official site, Microsoft presented arguments in favor of the transaction, saying both Sony and Nintendo will remain “bigger” and that their consoles continue to be highly relevant for “traditional gaming.” The company said the acquisition fits within its broader gaming strategy and aims to expand options for players and developers.

Company emphasizes access for players and opportunities for developers

Microsoft stated that “players and developers are at the center of Xbox” and that it wants to enable players to access games “anytime, anywhere, on any device.” The company added that developers should have more choices to build, publish and monetize their games.

Regulatory review underway

The acquisition is under review by global competition regulators. The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) recently moved its assessment into a “Phase 2” investigation, signaling a more thorough inquiry into the deal.

Microsoft expresses confidence despite scrutiny

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said regulatory scrutiny of transactions of this scale is relatively normal and expressed confidence that the company will complete the acquisition. Microsoft did not clarify what it meant by “bigger” in comparisons with Sony and Nintendo, which could refer to console sales or market position.
