What is Xbox Game Pass and how it works

Xbox Game Pass is a subscription service from Microsoft that lets players on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs download and play a large catalog of games while their subscription is active, with additional perks such as discounts and cloud streaming on certain plans.

Scope and core features

The service provides subscribers with access to a diverse library that covers multiple genres, from action and adventure to RPGs and sports. Games available through the service can be downloaded to the subscriber’s console or PC and played offline, provided the subscription remains active.

The catalog is rotating: Microsoft regularly adds new titles and periodically removes others. Many first-party games from studios owned by Microsoft are available on Game Pass on their day of release.

How subscriptions work

Players subscribe to Xbox Game Pass on a recurring basis (monthly at the time of publication) and gain access to the games while their subscription is current. Downloads are available for compatible devices, and cloud streaming is offered on higher-tier plans so subscribers can play without running the game locally, which enables play on less powerful devices such as smartphones, provided they have a solid internet connection.

Benefits for subscribers

  1. Wide library: Access to recent releases and acclaimed classics across genres.
  2. Cost savings: A potentially economical alternative for players who would otherwise buy several titles individually.
  3. Day-one releases: Many Xbox-exclusive titles from Microsoft-owned studios launch directly on Game Pass.
  4. PC support: A dedicated Game Pass for PC brings a selection of games to Windows users.
  5. Extra discounts: Subscribers receive discounts on game purchases and add-ons in the Microsoft Store.
  6. Cloud gaming: Available on the most complete plan, allowing streaming play on devices that can’t run the games natively.
  7. Backward compatibility: The catalog can include titles from Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One compatibility programs.

Which plan to choose?

Xbox Game Pass is offered in multiple plans to fit different devices and needs: console-only, PC-only, and a combined plan that covers both platforms and adds extra benefits.

The Console plan grants access to the Xbox console library, discounts and special offers and, at the time of publication, costs R$32.99 per month.

The PC plan, priced at R$29.99 per month at the time of publication, includes the PC game library and adds EA Play, which provides access to select EA titles; it is tailored to games released for computers.

The Ultimate plan combines the benefits of the Console and PC plans, enables cloud gaming, includes Xbox Live Gold, and costs R$49.99 per month at the time of publication.

Impact on the industry

Xbox Game Pass changed how players access games by offering a subscription model that bundles a broad selection of titles. Its approach influenced other companies to explore subscription offerings and made a wider range of games more accessible to many players.
