Sony filed a patent for a system that would let the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller act as an intermediary to complete purchases, relaying payment authorizations from a smartphone or a contactless card to the console.
How the DualSense would facilitate purchases
According to the patent documentation discovered by Patentlyze, the proposed flow would let a user bring their smartphone close to the DualSense, triggering a payment request on the phone. After the user authorizes the transaction on the mobile device, the necessary payment information would be transmitted through the controller and the purchase would register on the PS5.
One diagram in the patent also shows the possibility of placing a contactless card directly near the DualSense to complete transactions, including purchases of gift cards.
In practical terms, the feature would offer an alternative for players who prefer not to store payment data permanently on their console or PlayStation account.

Patent filing does not guarantee a consumer feature
The documentation represents a protected idea, but Sony has not confirmed any plans to roll this functionality out to consumers. Technology companies frequently file patents for concepts they may never commercialize, modify, or abandon.
As a result, the DualSense payment capability currently exists only as a description in a patent filing and should not be taken as confirmation that a payment-enabled controller will appear on the market.
